Sewing Tip: Ribbon Tags in Shorts

So my sewing room has looked like a sweat shop likely as I have been making several pairs of shorts for my daughters.  (By the way, shorts are really easy to make and only use a little bit of fabric).  Our one daughter heads off to camp next week in Western NC so I need to get them done quickly!

For her though, I make little shorts that have a flat front and only elastic in the back so she really has no trouble which is the front and which is the back when she puts them on.

For our other daughter though, her shorts has elastic all the way through the top of the shorts and she can never figure out easily which way they go on.

So here is my tip for today on how to solve that problem.  As I was sewing the elastic casing at the top of the shorts, I took a 3" piece of ribbon, folded it in half and pinned it in the casing before sewing it.

So while I am sewing around the top of the shorts to make the casing, I also sewing in a little ribbon tag into the BACK of the shorts so that she easily knows how to put them on.

Of course, I tried to explain to her that you can also tell by looking the seams and that the back of the shorts have more fabric than the front but that is when my 9 yr old looked at me like I had 2 heads.  =)  So I guess we will stick with pretty ribbons.

Now you can buy CUTE, custom made ribbon tags on Etsy to sew into your shorts but if you don't have time to wait for them to be made, then just use some pretty, grosgrain ribbon that you have on hand.
